The first ever 2 vs 2 winners have been crowned!
Back to top Back to main Skip to menuThe first Urban Zone 2vs2 tournament was held on Saturday the 23rd of april. It was the first event that had a cash prize consisting of 20 euro's. However this prize could be increased by the viewers of the live stream. Donations and subscriptions would be added to the prize pool. Several very generous members of the community did just that! With a whopping €99,69 euro's donated within an hour there was a real incentive for the players to do their utmost to win!

Before we continue with a report of the tournament we would like to take this opportunity to thank Adriix for his €69,69 + €10 donations. SevenofNine for €20, Shanfara €10, KJT €5,55 and swaginacup €4,45. Once more thank you!
The build-up
As we wanted to keep the event manageable we restricted the number of teams that could compete to 16. We didn't expect a lot of interest as the event was held on a Saturday. The signups exceeded all of our expectations, the first 16 spots were taken within 24 hours and I expect that we could have had a 32 team tournament if we would have allowed it.
The signups were on a "first-come, first-served" basis. Despite this we had some very good clans show up. Add a clan like orKs Esports who even fielded two additional teams to take the spots of a couple of no-shows and we we're set to start.
It was a double elimination tournament, 12 minute matches to keep it fast and interesting for the viewers. For the players they'd at least get a second chance if they had one bad match(up). A good balance for viewers and players alike.
The tournament
All 30 matches (minus a couple of forfeits) were played within 5 hours. We started off with a match which could have been the final, puzz* vs Roma` aka szejdi's DNGRS# since they were rocking that tag. It stayed close for the first half and then ex0tic and crimzon started to kick into gear. Puzz* won 23 to 13. Unfortunately Roma` did not feel like playing in the Lower Bracket (LB) and dropped out immediately after this. A real shame for a clan that stalked the admins to be able to play in this tournament.
Aside from team koko no team really got close to making it difficult for Puzz*. They stayed in the Winners Bracket (WB) throughout the tournament. In the WB final puzz* dispatched quite easily of koko consisting of r0cket and dovakyne by beating them 15-7 on orbital. koko dropped down to the LB final where they would have a vs #orKs. (neyfast and Shanfara) for the right to play the Grand Final. An intense battle on orbital ensued, but with 12-9 koko would set themselves up for a rematch and possible revenge vs puzz*.
The Final
Not only the fame and glory of winning the first Urban Zone 2vs2 Tournament was on the line. But in the mean time the donation counter had climbed to the unexpected amount of €119,69 (<3 Adx). When we passed the €50,- mark we decided to split the pot up, 80% to the winner, €95,75 (€47,87 pp) and 20% to the runner-up, €23,93 (€11,96 pp). That's not too bad for 5 hours playing your favourite game
The final was a best of 3 which was a lot closer than their previous match, after an eliminations Tohunga_b10 and Austria were chosen and if a third map would be needed to decide a winner it would be a replay of Orbital. Puzzles, who had not lost a map throughout the tournament, seemed their old selves on Tohunga it ended 12-8 in their favour. Then r0cket and dovakyne showed them they certainly weren't pushovers and with a score of 12-10 won on Austria. A rematch on Orbital would decide who took the money and glory, koko's only loss was on this map by the hands of Puzz*. Despite the score being a lot closer than the 15-7 the last time, puzz* managed to continue to force their will upon koko and won 15-11! Making them the first winners of a Urban Zone 2vs2 event. Congratulations ex0tic and crimzon of clan Puzzles!
